Domain Controller and File Server
« on: May 27, 2008, 01:53:21 PM »
Hello

Dear Friends

This is my second post on this forum, I want to prepare another Machine of SME server to work as domain controller and file server in my company.

Please guide if any one already using SME server as Domain controller with windows xp/win2000.win98 clients, Is this stable setup and windows client can access their home drives as we can configure in windows servers etc.

Secondly we are suing one Windows NT machine as file server, foxpro for do base application are shared from server and users accessing them with map drive option from their system. I want to switch that files server from windows to SME, if any one can guide how I can configure these tasks so users can access foxpro for dos base application from new SME server.

Best Regards

all the informations you need are in the documentation, in the how-tos and Faq pages.. read them carefully

one note about foxpro: search on google for "samba shares foxpro" as this is not a sme issue but a samba and foxpro issue.. IMO you should not have problems.

Ciao

p.s. I suggest you to test and try your configuration on a test server, even a virtual one (vmware is your friend), before switching.

I would warn you about foxpro. I have tried several times to host a foxpro database on SME and Linux in general. (I really don't know much about how this particular foxpro database is put together as I didn't write it.) We have had no end of trouble with it. We will think it is working and suddenly two weeks later it will corrupt a bunch of files in the database or will duplicate several entries. We have finally moved it back to a windows share as it seems to be the only way to ensure stability. Your database may be written in such a way that you will not have problems or you may find the magic combination of settings and it will work fine.

Hello

Dear friends

Thanks very much for your prompt reply with guide line based on your practical experience regarding my questions.

It is good that your people are already using SME as domain controller since many years .

I actually joined this new company just couple of months ago, on that time there was only one  server which was handling Lotus notes server with more then 20 databases, Fox pro data bases, gateway  and as domain controller. I just split them in to three different servers machines now one HP server only handling Notes server , Foxpro application are on old server but upgraded from NT to 2003 server and Gateway machine is a SME server which is also configured as domain controller.

But i have plan to replace Foxpro machine's OS from 2003 server to SME server which can also handle domain controller task, is it good idea?

With only use of SME as Gateway convinced me to adjust this great system for other tasks as i mentioned above and that great advantage is we all new members have help of this forum.

Can any one confirm that we can install and configure Lotus note domino server on SME server machine, Suse and redhat it is very easy after installation of package only need to replace full data folder of domino server with new installation and its start work.

Please guide me if any know about any free server & Client antivirus product for SME server.

Would it be possible for you to test your foxpro database on the existing SME for a month or so before you committed to a new server? I have never used lotus but I would give foxpro a good long test period before I took out the windows box. (If somebody else is hosting foxpro databases on SME with no trouble I wish they would speak up here. As this problem may be unique to my situation.)

If you are used to Active Directory in your Windows 2003 domain. You will find samba to be a bit of a step back. It works more like a Windows NT domain.

Hello

yes it is good idea to prepare test server before implementing file server with SME.

Can any one guide where is help about how to share folder on sme server so i can copy couple of databses on server and shared them for users for maping.

Any one know about Anti virus solution in SME server in server & Client environment as we can configure Norton corporate edition or Trend Micro office scan.

We call a share an Ibay.

I am personally not using a centrally managed AV. So I can't help you there.
