Topic: Problems with Initial install of 5.1.2 - it runs Red Hat

Hi,

I am trying out SME 5.1.2 from an ISO image. I burnt the CD and made a boot floppy. I get to the 'accept' screen, detecting the mouse etc.

Then all of a suddent the computer runs X and launches into a Red Hat config screen. After selecting 'workstation','server' etc an exception occurrs and the install bombs out.

I'm using a DEC Celebris Pentium 166 with a SCSI hdd (AIC driver) and an IDE CDROM. Eventually I will be building a P3 server with HPT ide-raid and SCSI dat tape. I see from discussions that HPT support has been made by a third party, but SCSI DAT tape support (Sony) wasn't listed. Any luck with these drives?

Any help appreciated, even to get the basic server running!

Are you sure you're using an ISO image and boot disk of SME 5.1.2?

It sound a lot like you're attempting to use the Red Hat stuff.

I am testing out the SME CD again, but on a PC that can boot from CD. The install has stayed in text mode so far, and the prompts are as expected.

Once it is finished I will try using the boot floppy rather than the CD. I'll be cheesed off it that works because it means something is strange with the old PC. Perhaps having a SCSI hdd confuses it. I might dig out an old IDE drive for it to play with.

Just letting people know that the boot floppy and CD combo worked fine on an IDE system. I have no idea what happened on the SCSI machine but at least there is hope!

For some reason, I have had troubles with scsi cdroms doing weird stuff. I went through several on one machine, and finally installed a 6x ide. No problems after that...

No. Only Debian.

On the last test I copied the install files to a FAT32 partition and let it go from there. It still bombed out (after going through Red Hat).

The SCSI is only for the hard drive, the CDROM was ATAPI.
