SME w/Dell Poweredge 1550
« on: September 01, 2008, 04:06:35 AM »
Greetings one and all!

On the 18th of August I posted a question that addressed the running of SME on my Dell Poweredge 1550 and
whether anyone had any experience with this combination or not.

I have an older rev of SME up and running fine on the Dell. The internal RAID was disabled and the software is managing the twin SCSI drives nicely and I love the SPEED!!! Its faster than I expected, but the server has twin 1.13GHZ processors and nothing but the SME software to run, so it should serve my needs nicely.

I am running the older 5.5 with the 6.0 upgrade. I see by the posts here that recommendations are to move to the
newer release. I have been away from the software for a while and other than bug fixes, could someone explain the advantages to the upgrade???????? Newer is not always necessarily better. just ask the Windows Vista community!

My thanks to all that read my previous post and those that took the time to read this one!

I will shortly register my IP with Go-Daddy's DNS and the system will be on the web.

I am running the older 5.5 with the 6.0 upgrade.

6.0 has many vulnerabilities in many of the installed software packages.  And nobody is providing any updates.

6.0 also has multiple bugs which have since been fixed.

We are well past V6.0, there was 6.5, then 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3. If you follow the forums, v8.0 is being worked on. There is very little support for v6. i am running 7.3 on an HP Proliant ML110 (yeah, had great fun opening the box and formatting the preinstalled Win2k3 with SME 7.3, then claiming the US$200 rebate from MS for deploying it!!)

This version is very stable, more secure than all previous versions, and supports Vista out of the box without having to patch Vista (well, did for me anyway).

Go for the upgrade...
