Topic: Building a bootable e-smith CD

I am trying an experiment with E-Smith for the first time.  Unfortunately I have never build a CD with a *.iso file.  How does this work?  Is there any documentation that describes this?  The Roxio CD creator software that I have on my XP machine indicates that I also have to build a bootable floppy.  Is it not possible to simply build a bootable CD?  

Sorry if these are novice questions but any clear help would be appreciated.

I've used older versions of Easy CD Creator, but not since Roxio took over, but it *should* be the same.

You tell the program to 'Burn CD from image.'  I believe this is under the file menu.  You then change the file type to iso and browse to where your image is sitting.  This will create the bootable CD.  No other steps are required.

I found what I thought was the right option titles "create bootable CD".  Unfortunately it does not seem to boot.  I tried my RedHat CD and it boots fine.

Here are a few data points that may help identify the problem:

- When you place the CD in a Win XP system, it shows 2 files on the CD:
BOOTCAT.BIN  2KB
BOOTIMG.BIN  272,960KB

- The options on the "create bootable CD" screen are as follows:

Bootable CD Type:
   Floppy Disk Emulation (1.44MB)
   Floppy Disk Emulation (2.88MB)
   Hard Disk Emulation
   No Emulation

The default was Floppy Disk Emulation (1.44MB) which I chose.

Load Segment - The default value was 0x7c0 which I left as is.

Sector Count - The default value was 1 which I left as is.

Use existing image file - I selected the E-Smith smeserver-5.1.2.iso file.

Any ideas of what I did wrong?

You don't do any of this. If you have a fully functional Roxio installation you just double click the ISO image file and the burn will start.

I'll give that a try.  What is the purpose of the smeserver-5.1.2.iso.md5sum file in the ftp directory??

Mark: you burned the iso file itself, while the iso file contains an image of the cd to burn. Burn it properly, and you'll get a browsable cd full of directoryies and files and stuff.  Not the iso file you downloaded.
