Modem wont work :(
« on: May 04, 2002, 03:51:28 PM »
Hi all,

I have just installed esmith without a modem.  I then added a modem, gave esmith the connection details (ie username, pword, and phone number in the format stdcode followed by 6 digit number, ie 01234-123456).

My problem is that when i try the internet connection test in the console on the server it gives an error, saying the test failed, and that the server was unable to establish contact with the Mitel Networks server.

Furthermore, I do not hear the modem making any noises on dialup, which is strange (i set the config string to M1 - is this correct?).

last point - i have told esmith to try each of the 4 com ports but i am not sure if it even finds the modem, which is internal PCI diamond Supraexpress 56k.

Can anyone help me?

Duncan

Hi Ed

There is great problems with WIN Modems as many references in this site will confirm. Even Red Hat which e-smith is based on had problems with Win Modems. Get and external modem and save yourself a lot of heart-ache I'v used 3Com out of the box which is found by e-smith.

All the Best

Thanks guys,

I have tried an old external modem but it didnt work (although i think this was a hardware fault not a software one).

Aren't external modems quite pricey?  I don't really want to spend too much on it.

Cheers

Internal hardware modems - PCI or ISA tend to be expensive as well (although maybe not as much as external modems).

There are other things to consider as well, such as an internal modem will 9/10 force a reboot if they hang.

Try some thing along these lines if you want to go internal.
