Vista Business and roaming profiles
« on: May 06, 2008, 09:41:15 AM »
Hi, folks
I'm new in SME server so .. :)

We are running SME server 7.3 in our organization - currently 5 PCs - HP Pavilion with Vista Home Premium.
In workgroup mode everything was fine.
As Vista Home Premium doesn't support joining to domain, I installed Vista Business.
I joined PC to SME domain with roaming profiles support, there was two local profiles created admin and admin.domain and profiles was saved and later loaded on other machine +- correctly, so far OK
The problems started when I logged in with regular user, there was constanly error message:

your user profile was not loaded correctly
you have been logged on with a temporary profile. changes that you make to
this profile will be lost when you log off. please see the event log for
details or contact your administrator

and profile wasn't created and that happened every time :(
I've googled lot about this problem and only thing I found was that's kind a "vista bug" due to different profile strukcture compared to XP.
I tried to join one XP machine - worked like a charm profile was saved and loaded correctly! :)

I turned off roaming profiles on SME SERVER and thoose vista business machines are running OK.

Does anyone was able to set up roamimng profiles with VISTA BUSINESS?
Thanks in advance,
Andris

Have a look on the bug tracker as there has been some reports trying to use VISTA with SME Server, also report any findings to a new bug tracker so that they may be fixed/supported in future releases. Thanks.

OT: if they are vista business then you could do a license downgrade to xp pro (much better IMHO)

E vero Stefano!  A much better OS. In installed Vista to have a play but it only lasted 4 hours before I replaced it with something better - (dual boot XP and Ubuntu).

But how long can we continue to rely on Windows XP clients?  In my opinion, we can't survive as a server distro if our answer to every question is to use yesterday's technology, ie.
  • Windows XP clients connect but Vista, Ubuntu and Macs don't
  • Samba without ldap
  • php4 instead of php5
  • ye olde style printing instead of cups.

We are starting to look a little bit dated, in my humble opinion.

I have solved my problem about "Vista business & roaming profiles"
If someone needs help visit
http://www.nabble.com/Samba-and-Vista-profile-probs-td16764249.html

You need to delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\SID of user
from the register.

I suppose that the last sme server update has changed SID in samba and Vista doesn't agree. After key deletion roaming profile works fine.

a 30 seconds search on M$ site
... that's 30 seconds longer than I want to spend on a MS site!
