Where to post a feature request?
« on: October 01, 2008, 02:12:40 AM »
Before making a mistake i wanted to ask here where should i post a feature request?

What feature request?
- Option to activate RBL and SBL (with the corresponding warning) from the admin panel
- Option to activate Greylisting (also with a warning) from the admin panel

I know that both options are very risky and no good developer suggest to use them...but they are usefull and start to be used widelly...

Maybe including so fine grain option on the panel is a bit to much, then at least the creation of a single command activation in the style of "signal-event rbl-sbl-activate" or a lightweight contrib to set both up or something like that because both options can be activated manually but both are complex to setup to *nix noobs like me that know very little still of linux...(and afaik all the binaries are there in the base systems waiting to just be activated and used)

Maybe the bugtracker isn't the best place for this
and the forum is, ie it's a support request

There is a very slim to no chance of it being added to the Email panel.

There is a much better chance of improving the documentation in the wiki so that n00bs can understand.
I suggest you find any references in the wiki
post the links here and explain what you don't understand

http://wiki.contribs.org/Email

RBL is there, and i DO understand the instructions, after all they are kinda copy/paste and i have a background on email server (came from Mdaemon, worked like a charm for me for like 5 years, but thats another story) so i know what to do and what not to do and what my mail server is going to do given a mail etc etc etc...but thats not common on nix-noobs like me (anyway noobs to this usually have a new server with new email accounts still not harvested by many spamers, if any at all), but i still think that there is needed a single command to activate it...or a easy to get 3kb contrib or something like that...

And for greylisting...there is only this http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=33662.0 and looks VERY outdated and even dangerous to try on 7.3...and i know what devs and some hardcore admins think but greylisting worked nicelly for me on the Mdaemon (i was just tired of windoze problems, unfortunatelly even if micro$oft releast a zillion security patches and whatever that OS is not good enough to be a server...i still use it on my everyday computer...but that is also another unrelated subject and story)

And dont take me wrongly, im happy with SME and im not going back at all, i was just trying to be a little more confortable with my setup, but is working for my daily spam storm just with SA and RBLs activated and manual BL...down from 200 spam daily on our oldest address to 5-10 spams daily...i mean, im already happy the way it is now, i just wanted to lower a bit more that number...

OK, you could make a request, It wouldn't be hard to make a contrib to set extra email settings
(my sig takes you to one, but it's non gpl)

NFR requests are a source of ideas if contrib writers have time on their hands

The latter parts of that thread ie Jan 2007 onwards should still be generally applicable ie it refers to the qpsmtpd greylisting plugin and how to configure it, which is still a part of sme7.3, if you really must use it.

It also refers to a test release contrib to help manage white & black RBL entries as well as spamassassin/junkmail entries re qpsmtpd rejection etc. It has been working OK for the last 18 months.
See
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/smeserver/contribs/dmay/smeserver/7.x/testing/smeserver-wbl/

Do you also have executable content filtering enabled ?

Are you using the bayesian techniques mentioned in the Sonoracom howto ie use of a LearnAsSpam folder to drag undetected spam messages to, which eventually teach the spam filter to reject those type of messages, cutting down your spam even further over time ?
It's in the Email FAQ or see
http://www.sonoracomm.com/support/19-inet-support/49-spam-filter-configuration-for-sme-7

You could also enable additional RBL's SBL's to get really tough with email as per the defaults for a new sme.

To be completelly sure, this post info is correct to be used on 7.3 even if it says 7.1?

I also was scared to use that one as there is not much mention to it on the wiki or the forums, i though that it was in a very very early alpha test phase...

Content filter on, bayes also on but im not sure if its really that usefull, looking at logs it looks like bayesian help on less that the 10% of the spam cases, the rest is handled by other SA rules, imo its kinda cpu resource intensive for the little benefit (im using an outdated laptop as server tho) but ill keep it on for some time, everywhere i look it says that it gets better overtime...and about rbl-sbl yea, i had that active too and it is totally worth it, it DOES make a difference (maybe my problem is that im in a country where internet laws are nonexistant and isps dont respect much even its own customers so there are a lot of "semi-open" mail servers around and spamers)...

On a sidenote, if the greylisting info is correct should i add it also to the wiki info about email?

Only if you install it and it works,
and even then maybe create a bug and have it reviewed

Im not sure if im going to try greylisting before some1 else confirm that that info is correct or before i get enough time to install a virtual test server to test that out away from my production server...

And about smeserver-wbl it does work, i tryed it and is working apparently, i have to move my BL list to this one...

1 question:
- I saw somewhere a mention to add own domains to the badhelo list, is that a good practice? some spammers also use your own domain as helo and it looks like a good idea to stop those before even trying but im not sure if that is going to also stop legit mail going in or out...(to explain this, if for example my domains are site1.com and site2.com add those to badhelo, im not sure if that is going to affect internal mail, mail from users outside the network with legit accounts on the server or even bounced mails as some servers accept the mail and send a bounce message some hours later)
