Zarafa Update??
« on: October 14, 2008, 02:00:07 AM »
I was wondering if we could get an update on the Beta prognosis for the Zarafa contrib.  I have been following the wiki and bug tracker progress.  Seems things are progressing nicely.

It seems a little more difficult to follow the progress over at zarafa.com due to there lack of dev forum or bugtracker.

Any thoughts you can share?

Thanks

MJ

No new community site build, so no change in status:

Zarafa 6.20 beta 4 opensource community edition (11804)

MJ,

I have been using this contrib now for about a month the only issues I have had with it is some times for some reason when I log into the web access portal I get a blank screen I have to restart the SME server and all is fine until the next time I have not found a fix for this. One other issue for some reason I can not receive html email through outlook using the connector other than that Zarafa works great I think with time these issues will be resolved.

Hi Steve,

The blank screen issue is a known bug:  http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4620

The bug lists a workaround:  sv restart httpd-e-smith

You should list the other problem in the bug tracker.  That seems like a pretty big issue, or at least I know it would not be acceptable to me.

I have also had a test server running for a while.  I am waiting for the next zarafa code release.  I think the SME Zarafa RPM is working very well.  I was able to load up a server in no time.  I have not tested it on a trial production machine.  May be time to "rise" an AFFA backup and see what happens.

Zarafa is a most promising candidate for an Exchange replacement for my purposes.  It has a couple of drawbacks, but is a very solid candidate.  It needs to have the bugs worked out before I jump in with both feet however.

Steve & MJ,

I too have been running Zarafa on the bench for awhile. so far I'm liking it alot. My setup is running the unix integration and I have shut down Horde and opened POPS to zafara-gateway from the outside, and imap internal.

If I was better at code, I'd make a custom user panel to choose whether the user was default or zarafa.  That way I could allow on creation or afterwards the redirection to occur. As of now, I have it set to generate for every new user.

I know that the db config provides greater native sme integration, but IMHO the look of their interface puts Horde to shame.

I hope that their is continuing efforts to get this package out of beta.

The web access and the Outlook really hooked me.

I too am no coder, wish I has some skills but wishing does not make It so.  Darrel's latest RPM uses the db for user control, but you know that.  I found the command line interface not bad at all to work with.  I will only have a few users so it is not a big deal for me.

Looking forward to continued development.

The new release is for their commercial product, not the open source.

From what I can see they are still distributing build 11804 via the download page.  There is a reference to a 12000 something build in one post, but that was shot down as being a beta testing version.  Interesting, they appear to be beta testing a new beta version of a beta release.  If this results in a better beta, I am all for it.    javascript:void(0);

For what it is worth, my Zarafa test server has been performing really well.  The only annoying ocurance is the need to restart the httpd service fairly frequently (as described in Bug 4620).  I am looking forward to continued development.

I'm installing zarafa on a test system and got stuck on this part:
Code: [Select]
After creating a user on SME, create a zarafa account and redirect mail to zarafa with

/etc/e-smith/events/actions/zarafa-create-user

I created a zarafa user on SME Panel and when I go to run the script above:
Code: [Select]
Enter username
zarafatest
Enter password:
zarafatest
Enter e-mail address
zarafatest
Enter full name
zarafatest
executing...
User created.
User list for Default(2):
        username                fullname
        ---------------------------------------------
        SYSTEM          SYSTEM
        zarafatest          zarafatest

It just stays there.
Is this how it's done?

Enter e-mail address
zarafatest

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I always enter the full email address  user@emailaddy.com

What do you get when you ask for a list of Zarafa users??
/usr/bin/zarafa-admin -l

It certainly looks like you have a user.

Are you able to log in as the user via the web interface?

Thanks for the fast reply,
Here's what I get:
Code: [Select]
zarafa]# /usr/bin/zarafa-admin -l
User list for Default(2):
        username                fullname
        ---------------------------------------------
        SYSTEM          SYSTEM
        zarafatest          zarafatest

Yes, I can login to the interface using the zarafatest user I created.

I'm still not clear on the contrib, one needs to recreate the users that will be able to use the zarafa interface?

The Zarafa Contrib is still being developed.  There are a few bugs, which you can check out via the bug tracker.

Zarafa has several ways to deal with users.  Currently, and I point out this is still up for discussion, Darrell has implemented the database option (db).  With this option, Zarafa maintains its own list of users and does not rely on the SME users.  A problem with this approach is that email received for that user will be rejected unless there is an identical SME user.  This requires separate entries for each user, first via the SME control panel and secondly via the zarafa-admin command line.  The order in which the users are created makes a difference, with the SME user having to be created first.

.
This was Darrel May's comment (01/25):
Quote
Current is .26:
 yum update smeserver-zarafa --enablerepo=smetest
I don't know what is in the change log, it is still under development. So be carefull.
