Linux distro client for sme
« on: October 26, 2008, 05:06:17 AM »
Hello,

I have looked over the forums and found the guide for mephis and the one for using ubuntu with old packages to connect to the sme server.

Has anyone got a recent working version of ubuntu to connect to sme?  I can get it working as per the guid with fiesty and old packages but those packages are really outdated.

I havnt tried mephis yet .. does the newest release of mephis talk to the sme server as easy as the guide makes it?

I need the profiles to behave like windows ones in the sense that they all need to be able to roam and sync up when the user rejoins the domain be it lan or vpn. (most important)

I would also be able to grant the box local sudo rights... (not that important but nice)

Any info anyone has had on this would be greatful to me.

I am trying really hard to make the switch.

Thank you for your time,

Derek L

I wrote the mepis howto, It's not complete, as it stands you need to create a user on the pc first, I left that for others to do

I'm going to try Ubuntu next week, their users are creating better documentation
I'll do my bit for now to avoid fragmentation of effort in getting a linux client to connect to SME simply, and comprehensively

I want to Authenticate with LDAP not Winbind see http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=42350.0

LDAP auth on SME is still a work in progress, so I wouldn't go there yet.

However, winbindd auth does work out-of-the box.   The place to be looking for answers to this question is over on the Ubuntu forums.   You'll want to look for help at setting up Ubuntu as a domain member with winbindd.   My guess is that there's a ubuntu package in the mainstream apt repositories to set this up for you and provide a nice GUI app to configure the client.

You'll also want to look over on the Ubuntu boards about what it takes to setup profile mapping.  If SME can't do what you need, then come back here and state specifically what Ubuntu needs from the server to provide profile mapping.

Back to which distro, I'm thinking now of LinuxMint
http://www.linuxmint.com/about.php = A refined, but still compatible Ubuntu
ranked three on distro watch
Mint 6 due soon based on Ubuntu 8.10

Fedora/Redhat and some derivative distros (e.g. CentOS) can authenticate against Windows domains by running the authconfig (-gtk for graphical) tool.

Alternatively, Xandros Desktop Professional, a commercial distribution, can join domains out of the box.

Yes there are a lot of tools to join windows domains.  From what I've gathered this is joining both AD / kerberos domains.  Not the older NT4 Winbind domains.

I did see that there is a advanced samba contrib on the forums here and was wondering if anyone tried the AD Domain Controller build with linux clients.

When is SME 8 pumping out and what features will it have?

Thanks,
