ProFTP quit -- how to restart?
« on: May 10, 2002, 08:44:48 PM »
Today, someone tried to login in via FTP from a remote location (public access is allowed), and he's had no problems for months and months. Suddenly, as soon as he establishes a connection, my server closes the connection.

I simply rebooted the server remotely, and FTP access was restored.

My question, however, is how I can I fix this problem? I don't care why it stopped, neccessarily, as that's the nature of computers. Rather, if this happens in the future, how can I get FTP working again without rebooting the entire server (thereby squashing my chance at having some awesome uptime)?

I read from a previous post that "Proftpd is restarted anew whenever anyone connects, since it's started from xinetd," so I can't simply restart the daemon like I would restart Apache or something.

Something I didn't think about until after the fact is the signal-event function of SME server. If I had typed "/sbin/e-smith/signal-event console-save" at a console, would that have affected FTP?

Thanks,
Quade
