New Server - old emails
« on: November 16, 2008, 12:30:57 AM »
Old machine SME 7.3; server only; +fetchmail; +backup with DAR. Used as mailserver.

New machine (different hardware) same setup but planned also as fileserver.

How I can get the "old emails" to the new server?
My idea is: (right(?) directories in backup of old and restore to new server ??

Can it work ? What are the right directories ? Or is there another / better solution ?

Unfortunately my Linux and SME knowledge is only basic.

Thank you for help.

Kind regards
Mike

Hi

if you have a backup of the old server then you should install new one and then restore the backup.

If you are migrating from a server to a newer one, I suggest you to use Affa (look into wiki for all the instructions)

Thank you.
that means I can/need to use all directories of the backup.

I have selected all directories offered by "backup with dar" by default.

You could use the backup to usb device option in the console on your old box to create a complete backup of that sys.

After installing SME on your new hardware, the first option during bootstrap-console is to restore from USB.

This will get you back up and running on the new hardware fairly quickly.

Use Imapcopy ... works really well ... have used it myself to copy mail across to new server.

I logs into an account and copies everything from the old account to the new one.

You have to setup all the accounts on the new machine first and setup the cfg file with all the user details etc.

I like complete fresh installs when I do new servers so this is the tool I use.

If you need any more info on IMAPCopy just let me know.
