Restoring after doing "Backup to USB"
« on: November 27, 2008, 03:05:28 PM »
Hello

I've got an SME 7.3 server with 2 80GB mirrored disks which have about 64GB of data on them. I want to move to new hardware, with bigger disks, so i thought i'd try the 'Backup to USB' and 'Restore from USB' feature. I'm a little sceptical about the process so i thought i'd try with a test machine first to see if it worked.

On the test machine, the backup went fine, took nearly 6 hours but created a 48GB .tgz file. I then re-installed SME from scratch and ran the restore. This is where the problem appears, the hard disk is now 100% full and all the files haven't been restored. Does SME use the hard disk for temporary storage while decompressing the backup file?

Can this be changed somehow? My backup device has 500GB free so that would be the ideal destination for this scenario.

I do plan to have 2x250GB in the new server so it shouldn't be a big issue but i'd like to be sure before i have to do this.

Can anyone help?

Have you had a look at this? Maybe better suited to what you want to do?

Thanks John,

20 minutes does sound better than waiting 6 hours!

I'll give that a try and let you know how it goes.

No.
