FTP Client Access Question
« on: December 10, 2008, 07:57:05 AM »
This is somewhat off the wall, but I can't get my head around it. I have a client trying to ftp to a remote site who is getting a "425 Can't open data connection" error. The client is set up to use PASV, but the error continues. I know I have FTP'd anonymously to sites many times in the past, so am not clear on why this error is coming up - shouldn't the masquerading functions manage the address translation so that the client IP is communicated to correctly?

I'm assuming it is a firewall issue, and I realize ftp picks ports randomly after establishing connection over port 21, but that doesn't explain why ftp has worked previously.

Any assistance gratefully received.

Thanks,

Are one of the parties concerned SME Servers? No? Than you are off topic here.

I am not sure if SME Server supports (passive) FTP, but certainly not anonymously. I know it supports sFTP.

Cactus,

Thanks. The client side is indeed through an SME Server - no idea what the FTP server is on.
