Status of www.malware.com.br?
« on: December 04, 2008, 07:23:18 PM »
Following the instructions here:

http://wiki.contribs.org/Email

I have used www.malware.com.br as a server for ClamAV malware signatures, but for the last week or so, this server has apparently disappeared - the name does not translate to an IP address:

# ping www.malware.com.br
ping: unknown host www.malware.com.br

Do anyone know of an alternative server? The signatures from this server have been quite helpful in limiting the number of spam messages.

I can get on to the server in my browser - so you may have some kind of connection issue.

Thank you for the reply - and yes, I can also lookup www.malware.com.br on e.g. http://www.kloth.net/services/nslookup.php

So I now suspect that my Internet provider may be blocking for nslookup for this domain. I know this provider has done that for piratebay, but I have no idea why it would be blocking a server that is set up to help fighting spam.

I have now entered the IP address (66.79.164.43) of www.malware.com.br directly in /etc/cron.daily/update_sanesecurity and this seems to work. But maybe a better solution would be to use e.g. opendns.org as nameserver? Any opinions on this? Or suggestions how to do it?

Kind regards,
Jesper

Sounds like you have found a perfectly acceptable workaround. Why work when you don't have to?

The obvious: talk to your provider and ask for their motivation to block this site. If they get the point that this is a proper site, which helps users they most likely will make an exception for it.
