Measure internet traffic
« on: September 29, 2008, 11:30:08 PM »
Is it possible to install a RPM which enables the measurement of internet traffic? I would love to keep track of the daily downloaded and uploaded traffic on ETH1. Is this possible? I already installed Sysmon, but this only shows a graph of the average speed of the network interfaces.

Hi Frederik. Thank you for your reply, but is it possible to get a list of bandwith used per day/month/etc? I don't want to install to many contribs on my freshly installed server. Can you please tell me what functionality this contrib has?

[edit]
Can someone post some screenshots?

Or cacti, there is a contrib for that (http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=35462.0). It gives me 4 different standard graphs: one day, one week, one month, one year. It also has some totals and allows you to zoom in on any date. For some samples you could look at http://www.cacti.net/.

It erases the data after one year, if you want to keep that longer you will have to change some settings.

Cacti looks amazing. Is it fairly safe to install it? The only reason I'm asking is that I like to keep my production SME box really basic with the minimum number of contribs installed in the hope it will minimise potentential problems later on. Unfortunately I haven't got a test server (due to lack of funds) at the moment.

I would say your choices are:

The Sysmon install and setup is the simplest followed by SystemMonitor (newer version of Sysmon but not in the repository). Sme7admin is the most useful to me but the most complicated to install since it requires outdated dependants. I have found Cacti takes some setup, unlike the others, to get good output.

Why don't you use vmware to install a test server? Works like a charm!
