Problem: Telnet from SME to Win2K
« on: May 15, 2002, 03:18:07 AM »
Hi everybody,

I want to admin my win2K server from a telnet connection from outside my office. To make this come true i firstly have to telnet to the SME box, and from there to the W2K server. I've set up an SME account and enabled the telnet login, so until this point there's no problem.

But whenever i try to telnet from the SME telnet client to the w2k server, after the login prompt appears, characters won't return until i press "Enter". Moreover,  in spite of typing the correct account information (login and password) it won't login to the windows shell.  It's like it freezes and no character will return to my SME console.

Now i want to know if there's something with the SME console configuration to do. The question comes when i indeed can telnet from any windows machine to this w2k server, but not from my sme telnet client.

Any help woul't be highly appreciated,

Thanks a lot in advance

Why don't you use ssh to connect to your e-smith server, and from there you can make a ssh connection to your w2k server.
SSH Server for windows is available.
For example this link http://www.networksimplicity.com/openssh/

Well Grub, that made the magic. Thanks a lot. But im still concerned about why the W2K telnet server won't accept my SME connections. Something to do with the shell it connects from?...perhaps the type of console .

Now i installed the OpenSSH software and you've been lots of help.

Thank you!

Yes... i don't know. Have to less information about that one.
Now it is more like a 'must know' what went wrong.
Still, ssh is a much better option. I don't think that I'm going to mind-break about that one.

Another thing you might want to try, unless you are in love with the new telnet in w2k server is use terminal servince, it is free in remote admin mode. just forward this port on the SMEserver box to the IP of the w2k server and you can do everything from that.. Term clients availble for most clients and i think i read some where lately that one is even available for *nix.. Hope this help!.

So it is free, hmm.
Even with unix based clients to the MS terminal  you have to pay for the licenses.
SSH new telnet... !!!
