New installation network problem
« on: December 24, 2008, 02:28:57 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I installed sme 7.3 on a system with two 3com 3c905 network cards. When running the check for a connection to Contribs.org, it fails. I re-installed SME three additional times. Upon the fourth time, i finally got a connection to Contribs.org. So i proceeded to setup the server and all worked well.

Upon the release of version 7.4, i did a clean install and i'm now encountering the same problem again. I receive a broadband connection from AT&T DSL. I've also tried setting it up on a Comcast cable connection, but the connection to Contribs.org still fails.

I've tried installing on a different machine with one 3com 3c905, and another card from linksys in case the problem lies with the network cards on the other machine. But still no cigar.

What i really don't understand is upon the 4th install as stated above, i finally got a connection. But upon re-installing again on the same hardware, it refuses to connect.

I'm at a loss. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I had a problem a while back which turned out to be caused by SME's WAN interface not accepting an IP address from the DSL router. Setting the IP statically on the WAN side fixed the issue.

If this does not help, you should post this problem in the Bug Tracker so it can be investigated by the developers.

Even if that does help, it should be reported in the Bug Tracker. The WAN interface should accept an IP address from the DSL router.

Thank you both. I've tried installing on a cable setup also, but still get the same thing.
I will try the static setup as advised, and let you guys know what happens.
Thanks.

How did you detect this? Which log file? What problem did you see? My clients on XP Pro on SME 7.4 are reporting intermittant loss of network connection then it pops back in stating they are connected. DSL static IP for internet. SME setup as gateway/server.

We would log on to the server and run ifconfig, which showed that eth1 had no IP address. It happened at random with a TPG-provided DSL modem.

Eventually I figured I would try a static IP (192.168.0.2/24) and it hasn't been a problem since.

I'm now setting it up using Comcast internet since it refuses to work using Bellsouth DSL. I've used three different network cards for eth1 (external), and still cannot get a connection.
What could possibly be causing this? I've used ver 7.3 and 7.4, and even used two different machines.

As you've been told multiple times, you should report the problem you are having via the Bug Tracker.
