Thank you very much for your input gzartman!

I will have a look at installing those rpms and maybe try it on a VM install first to see how things work and if they work without breaking webmail.

Sure appreciate all the input on this thread and thank all those who took the time to reply.

I believe these issues were related to installing non-centos produced rpms, not rpms released BY centos.  I agree with you that there are howtos out there for installing php5 on SME that could cause upgrade issues.

However, the packages contained in centosplus are built to respect the core release and are updated within 72 hours of a core release:  http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/centosplus/Readme.txt

SME 7.x updates should not have an issue with centosplus packages as any new centos released packages, which SME is based on, will respect the dependencies of the centosplus packages and visa-versa.

While centosplus packages are not officially supported by SME, I feel that the php and mysql updates can be made with very little risk to the end user.

I agree with you.. you should open a NFR in bugzilla..

AFAIK only 2 rpms have problems:
- smeserver-support
- e-smith-horde

but I think this should discussed in bugzilla and/or in dev mailing-list

I have finally run into software that I need that *requires* at least kernel 2.6.13. SME 7.4 is at 2.6.9. I checked Bug 3640 on Bugzilla and there is only one dependency still listed for SME 8.0. What can I do to help to move SME 8 to RC status?

Really? What is it? Perhaps they are mistaken.

fsniper (http://projects.l3ib.org/trac/fsniper) or similar, such as gamin (http://www.gnome.org/~veillard/gamin/). I was looking for utilities which support the inotify() system call. dnotify() won't work for me because I would most likely run into the per-process descriptor limit.

Meanwhile SME8 is beta you can install CentOS 5.2 and play with fsniper. I was do the same, because I need the same of you: inotify

May be is time to put our hands over SME 8 and help developers to finish. I will do it the next week.

I may have a show stopper .... When I degrade the RAID array on SME 8 b3 with all the updates running on a virtual machine it will not boot.

I have opened a bug report http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5070.

If any can confirm this please add it to the bug report.
