Define secondary dns server in setup?
« on: February 11, 2009, 02:41:29 AM »
I'm sure this has been answered before - I've tried searching and am not coming up with anything that is clear to me.  Apologies if it has already been answered.

Scenario:  I built a box at work that we use for testing stuff when we need an "external connection to the world" - ie it bypasses the corporate f/w and websense monitor.  ( this is on the up & up - powers that be know it exists )  After I obtained the external facing info that I was going to need to build it (static IP, subnet, gateway, etc....  ) I did just that - built it and it works like a champ  :)  Great.  Curious though....   the "admin" text mode configuration only asked about a single DNS Server - can I not enter a second?  The ISP provided IP's for both and I"d like to have 'em both in there just for redundancy in case one should drop - why not, right?

Thanks...

Are you sure you really need the external DNS as SME Server is perfectly capable of resolving internet domains by itself without an external configured DNS, this option is only used in rare cases normally (as stated in the text installer as well).

You will have greater reliability by NOT using your ISP's DNS servers, just leave the field blank.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.
