Installing RPMs
« on: May 19, 2002, 03:12:23 AM »
Hello all,
This is a stupid question really but here goes anyway! I am totally new to all forms of Linux and hence not familiar with RPM pakages. I am using SME server purely as a Windows file server and hence do not need a lot of the services it provides by default. Since I have 'low end' hardware it was suggested to me that I install the services control panel in order to turn off the things I'm not using. In order to do this I first installed Stephen Noble's RPM installer following his instructions. Then I used this to install the service control RPM. Everything seemed to go OK, the log generated showed no errors. However when I go to the services section in the server manager I can check or uncheck the boxes as much as I like and it has no effect! I have tried re-booting between changes, no effect. Am I doing something completelt wrong? Do I have to install all RPMs 'by hand'? Any help with this would be much appreciated. I appologise in advance if I am posting this in correctly.

Hello again!
I have since found this message:
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=12737.msg47874#msg47874
And have also discovered that I can access and change the services running from the text console. However this presents another question. Is there an update to correct the problem with this RPM under 5.1.2?
Any ideas?

Where did you find this RPM installer by Stephen Noble?

The RPM installer is listed in the contributed section here:
http://www.dungog.net/sme/howto/install.html
As I said I think the installer worked fine all along, it appears to be a problem with the web interface of the service conroller.
