no remote access
« on: November 16, 2008, 11:29:12 PM »
I am suddenly having an issue with a SME 7.3 server. I can not access it remotely. I Used to be able to. I thought applying the latest updates might cure it, so I went to the location and did that, but to no avail. I am not sure when this started. I used to be able to connect to server manager, ssh, and openvpn. I can ping the ip, but that is about it. The server does have access to the internet. They have Comcast as a provider.
Any Ideas?

Thanks

Bob

Sounds like a router problem to me.
Before you do anything to your server I suggest you to double check your router first.

I to am having the same problem. I have rebooted the router and am still having the same problem. If I reboot the SME Server I get a connection for a short time but then loose it after a couple of minutes. I VPN into the server. I also have 5 remote users that VPN in and all connections are doing the same thing. This seems to have started in the last 48 hours. But I do have access to the internet. I can access a computer in the office that I have port forwared to do Remote Desktop and that works.

I have resolved this. I upgraded to SME 7.4, but no luck. Then I reconfigured the server to swap eth0 and eth1. It is now working fine. I am not sure why this worked, but it did.

I have a similar problem. I cannot get in via PPTP from anywhere. Local or remote. This used to work on my old server but then suddenly stopped, or it worked one time but then the next time I wanted to use it it DIDN'T.

I have new machine with 7.4 installed from 7.4 disc. 1 PPTP user available. From local network under vista I set up the vpn network to the IP of the server (same way I did it when it worked) put the username in and the password klik connect, it waits a while then tells me the username and or password is invalid. If I then set the number of users to 0 and retry then I get "unable to establish a vpn connection" which makes sense as the SME box will have closed the port.

I am at a loss to know why. Initially I thought it might have been the new modem i put on (aiming for adsl2 but then found a RIMM in the way) but this would not explain why I couldn't connect from a local IP.

I have tried connecting to the fqdn and also the ip (external) and the ip (internal) but same result. Same result also from a winxp and OSX. I don't use VPN much but I like to have it as I occasionally work from home and leave files on my machine that I need while at work.

That is all for now.

Yes it is not all. I wanted to go to bed!!

Further to Stefano... I found a reference on bugzilla (bug 4996) relating to the contrib chilli-coova, which seemed to indicate some association with the problem I was having. So I went out on a limb and removed it. VPN now works.

Off to work now to test it from afar.
