"Verify workstation backup file" returns "error 111" [SOLVED]
« on: February 09, 2009, 11:34:29 PM »
I am trying to save backups using the "Configure Workstation Backup" option to backup to one of my Windows Home Server user shares.  When I try to verify the workstation backup file, I get the error back:

Quote
Unable to mount workstation shared folder mount error 111 = Connection refused Refer to the mount.cifs( 8 ) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)

I went into the command line interface and looked up the manual entry, but got no information on "error 111".

I also tried using the command line mount, "mount.cifs" and got as far as entering a password, only to find the same error 111 returned.

This post helped me with the command line:

I should also say that my password does not include the character "!".

What is going wrong?  What does the error 111 mean?

Does it contain other non-ASCII characters? Did you try with a very easy plain password, just to be sure the problem is not in your password.

Yes, I tried creating a user with a password using only numbers, letters -- both capitalized and not capitalized.

I am also getting this error:

Quote
Unable to mount workstation shared folder retrying with upper case share name mount error 6 = No such device or address Refer to the mount.cifs( 8 ) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)

Let me review what I am putting in:

For the workstation, I use the IP address:  192.168.1.123

For the directory, I use the directory address as it shows up in my Network Places in my Windows XP machine.  So if I see \\192.168.1.123\My\Directory in my Network Place address window, I put "My\Directory" in the directory window.

For the user and password, that's the usual.  I use capitals if I use capitals in the Windows user name.

I am a little confused about the backslash direction.  Which way should it be?

I should also say that in Windows Home Server, if you use a password without a character that is not just alphanumeric like @, then you cannot use "remote access".  I am also running a demo of Windows Server 2008 standard and it will not let you create a user password at all that is just alphanumeric.

I have completey misinterpreted the purpose of "Verify Workstation Backup".  The purpose is to examine which files have been backed up once a successful backup has been achieved.  Even if you have correctly set up a backup and it will work, this feature will generate errors until you have actually run a backup successfully and have a backup file in place.  The best way to confirm that your backup is set up correctly is to set the backup time for about the next two or three minutes and go into https://<your server name or IP address>/webmail to look at email confirmation of a successful backup.  Then, go to "Verify Workstation Backup" to see what has actually been backed up.  Finally, reset your backup time to whatever you originally intended it to be.
