deleted item on desktop returning after reboot
« on: April 09, 2009, 04:32:16 PM »
Hi, I have just taken over support for an smeserver. I have a problem with 1 windows machine that is connected to the domain with roaming profile. When items off the desktop are deleted, they return after the reboot. They are obviously being returned from the profile but why? I have checked permissions and all seem fine.

Version 7.4

Any ideas? TIA

Hi

Equally, if you add an item to the desktop does it disappear when you reboot?

I'm thinking along the lines of mandatory profiles, mean anything to you?

Hi Jason,

Thats the strange thing I can add to the desktop and its still there after the reboot.

The user has over 3gb of data on his desktop and so the machine takes ages to boot. I moved this data to the data drive but it all returned after rebooting

Just to make sure: you are doing a shutdown and restart though the meny and not a plain powercycle?

Hmmm

when you move the data from the desktop, I would check the files are no longer in the profile folder on local PC or in the profile folder on the server.  If they have gone but still come back on reboot something else is replicating them.
Have you ever used the file sync tool in XP, this could be doing it?

Hi Cactus, I am not sure what you mean, The shutdown and restart is on the client machine and it is a shutdown to off then restart. The server has no problem starting.

Jason, The files have gone from the local PC but not had chance to check the server. There is no sync tool running.

Because of the long time it takes to start (and presumable shutdown as well) I thought you might have not had enough patience and pressed the power button to restart/shutdown instead of using the start menu option and waiting for it to finish. If you do so profiles will not be saved or might get corrupted AFAIK.

Hi Cactus,   I see what you mean.. The desktop has been added to over the weeks and the reboot has gradually got longer.

I have tried the delete and then restart. and the delete and shutdown before restart. The restart can take up to 8 Min's.

The user didn't understand why the startup was taking so long and why the items were returning to the desktop after being deleted.

I have been through the usual checks of permissions etc. I could go delete the items off the client and shutdown. Then delete the items from the profile on the server but this does not cure the overall problem of items returning after being deleted.

As I don't use smeserver all the time i thought it may be a recognised problem.

Cheers, Mark

This may be way off beam but I remember when dealing with WinNT domains there was a problem with user profiles - sometimes a second profile would be created locally.
For example, a domain user "fred" should have a profile for "fred", but sometimes there would be a profile "fred0001" (or something like that).

This seemed to happen if there was a hiccup when frst logging on to the PC. (Very hazy on this, long time ago whan I was young and NT was bleeding edge).

Check your local profiles to see if this is the case. Also check the "all users" profile (but I think that's only a faint hope).

Whatever it is, I am fairly sure it is a Windows problem not an SME. Seek out someone who has good knowledge of domains and profiles in Windows.

Good luck
Ian
