How To Upgrade a Server
« on: March 20, 2009, 06:14:29 PM »
I have an old server needing an upgrade.  I got around the xfs-org dependancy issue from an early hylafax install and it is currently upgrading via yum to 7.4 .. I hope.

I have written my own scripts to back up the system up to an internal disk nightly and to sync /home a 2.5 usb every 1/2 hour so I have backup out my ears.

Problem is, this machine is old, all /dev/hd drives. I figured I'd suck all the data (ibays) off and then do a backup to desktop. Slot in the new box and restore from desktop than drop the data back in.

Sound ok? Will the backup to desktop get the imap mail files?

Yes, imap folders are contained within each user's home directory.

Cheers Charlie,
So backup to desktop will grab the profile files as well I guess. What if I took a 64 bit machine in there to back it up?  It could handle files greater than 4 gig but I guess the sme server couldn't deliver anyway.

Looks like you need to look at a new version for the huge files people want to keep :)

One more question ...

The old machine has HD drives while the new machine had SD drives. Doing a backup/restore won't upset this hardware issue?

dude.. looks like you are a troll..

you can upgrade release and hw at the same time without loosing a bit.. but you have to read the documentation..
I've moved from a sme 6.0.1. with dual ide raid1 to a 7.2 with dual sata in half an hour, with users connected.. simply using affa..

if you are not able to search and read, it's a PEBKAC problem, not a SME one

regarding your contribute to this forums and community, IMO you can continue work with windows until your death, I will not miss you at all.

Tandum, I suggest you change the tone of your messages or leave as you suggested earlier:

And that is it ... I'm never typing in another set of letters on this site. Fix the fucking thing.

You a more likely to get useful replies by being friendly and patient. If you have desireds or wish something will be implemented in SME Server there are a view ways to do so:
  • step up and describe what you want to be implemented in the bugtracker, but do not expect it to be done for you
  • dive in and work out the fix yourself and share the effort and results with the community so they can benefit
  • if you do not know how to do it ask someone to do it for you, but expect to spent for it then as only the sun rises for free
  • donate to the community so the core devs can spent more time on SME Server as no the group is very limited and the whole system is built in spare/free time

Good luck with your struggle... I am not even considering helping you if you continue like this.
