Hi All, I'm trying to install e-smith 5.1.2 on a Compaq EVO P4 1.8 ... the initial boot indicates that it does not recognize the ide controller and then it kernel panics after failing to mount the drive ... changed the bios to the oldest settings for the ide controller ... still no go ... anyone?  Regards, Howard

Sounds like a problem I had with Red Hat and a SCSI adapter,  the solution was to use a different combination!

Is there anything helpful at the COMPAQ web site ?  It may be that the BIOS settings for the hard drive are wrong, sometimes you have to disable advanced features, virus protection, etc to install the OS.

I, too had this problem with an Evo D510 P4 1.8.

I managed to get around the kernel panic by booting from floppy and passing a smaller amount of memory to the kernel than the machine actually had. (e.g. mem=128M when there's actually 256.)  Scroll back in your kernel messages after the panic and you will see that there is a memory issue at work here.

Don't get excited, though.  After the installation it still wouldn't work.  I finally gave up and found an older DeskPro PIII and it works fine.  This is kind of a bummer, though because the machines are attractive and well-built, they make beautiful workgroup servers.  Hope someone can look in to this a little.

I had this same issue on a server I was installing.  Hit my head on the wall several times trying to resolve it.

After going into the BIOS I ....

modified the Drive section
[Enhanced ATA/IDE Configuration]   changed from enabled to disabled

ie ensured the legacy IDE channels  DATA and SATA resources for OS requiring legacy IDE Operations.

Summary:

by turning off Enhanced IDE operation and forcing legacy operation, I was able to get my server to boot correctly and continue to my setup.

Note - I initially had a lot of problems even setting up the software so I took out the drive and did the install on another computer. and then put it back in the original one.  I have had success doing this in the past when the target computer didn't support Bootable CD's or some other thing.  In this case - I got past my first problem but then encountered the Kernel Panic problem.

Hope this helps

Installing an old version on new hardware is always asking for trouble. Running an old, unmaintained and insecure version is doing likewise ...
