Backing up and restoring remotely using BackupPC
« on: April 13, 2009, 12:01:01 PM »
We've got a second sme server set up to back up our main one using BackupPC.

I've configured it to call signal-event pre-backup on the machine being backed up, and pre-restore prior to restoring and a reboot after.

I grabbed a list of what to backup from one of the restore scripts.

Is this all that's needed, or is there another event to signal?

Moving this topic to the SME 7.x contribs forum, it is more appropriate there. Thanks!

Have you considered Affa? It's designed for exactly this scenario.

The server running BackupPC backs up all our workstations plus some other servers too.

I've tried affa to keep a running copy of the main server, but it needs to much disk space for subsequent backups

In that case, what I would do to answer your original question is to take a spare box and run a test restore. From your description, you should be okay so long as you are sure that the MySQL database is being backed up, but I would run a test to be sure.
