Permissions Problem
« on: May 01, 2009, 11:38:45 AM »
Hi

I've installed SME 7.4 and created a local domain at work (a small farmshop with an EPOS System and tills) with the server acting as a PDC. I have joined the tills and the backoffice PC's to the domain with the respective user groups. All works well except when a till user logs on to the domain that user cannot complete part of the process at the till to conclude a sale. The tills use Windows XP, FAT32 Operating System and the one part of the process they cannot complete is that when ringing up a sale from both the scales or the barcode scanner Windows renames an exe file to a bak file and then finally creates a temp directory and then copies this file to it creating a replacement exe file ready for the next transaction. (The reason this does it I'm told is it's the way the EPOS System keeps a record of the transaction so it can total it at the end of the sale).

So I created a group for Domain Admins which I knew would give the till users admin rights locally on the tills but this hasn't worked (even though they have 'full rights') and yet when the till user logs on locally Windows allows the user to do it with no problems. Is this to do with permissions and if so how do I get round this please?

Thanks in advance.

So, you've given your domain account local admin rights? Log in with your local administrator account and add make sure they're part of the local admin group.
Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon, and wise too late...

Hi

Yep, already checked that. Users part of local admins as I thought they'd need local rights, still no joy.!

try giving to the user full access permission on the directories involved in the process

btw, this is not a SME issue

Hi Stefano

Users already have full access permissions on the directories plus all System 32 files just in case but the file will not write.

I know this isn't a specific SME issue but this Server and the contribs is just fantastic, (way better than MS SBS I was considering putting in) and I don't want this minor hiccup beat me so I hoped someone from the forums may have encountered this before when they have deployed into a Windows environment.

from what you say the problem is in the sw.. so, I think that SBS won't fix it

try removing the sw from the till, then re-installing it as a local system administrator

is there any message in event viever? did the sw has any kind of log? is there any error message?

Ciao

Stefano

I did wonder about reinstalling the s/w as a local admin. I think I might give this a go and see if I install as the user on the domain with local admin rights to see if this cures it.

I will look at the event viewer and see if I can get any info from that and I'll make a note of the error message so thanks for the advice. I won't get a chance to do this now until Tuesday as its Bank Holiday weekend here so I'm on hols but when I get back I'll let you know how I get on.

What EPOS System is it, possible someone may have it working already.

Sure does beat.....shooting in the dark.

At this early stage of the game it's impossible to tell if it is or isn't a SME issue, very well could be.

If that is truly how it's being done then, it would be suggested to find another EPOS.

Simply not a desired programming approach.

"open source EPOS"

Yields for one http://www.openbravo.com/product/pos/

Also is that backoffice like in.....

Its a local company based in South of England called G7. Due to the purchase cost of the system (bought before I arrived in my new role), we will be unable to change to another system, so I'm really going to have to find a fix for this somehow.  Thanks for the suggestion though!!

Moving thread to General Discussion, as it is more appropriate there.
