New Hardware same disks kernel panic please help
« on: May 04, 2009, 02:47:08 PM »
Hi all...
I've looking around on the forums contribs etc, but still not sure what to do...
Last weekend my server went down. It was a hardware failure (motherboard or processor)
disk and info are OK.
Moved the disks (raid1) to a new hardware gives me a Kernel panic error...
I tested the new hardware with a new installation of sme and no problem at all (two spare small disks 120 GB)
I cannot simply move the server to this new installation as per "moving sme to new hardware" How to, because the raid is two disks 500GB each
I Wish I could put the kernel in a state of rediscovering hardware with no need to format or reinstall
maybe the rescue option of a new installation, but not sure if there is another way or if it is the best way of keeping things as much closer as they were before failure.
Another test I made was mounting drives in another hardware but not the hardware i want to use.
another spare motherboard and processor and it is working with no changes.
motherboard broken was an ASUS K8N nforce chipset sempron 3000+ processor
motherboard I want to use  is Gigabyte Ga7N400 pro ("hardware" raid disabled) tested with new install works ok as needed also nforce chipset
Motherboard I put as spare and works ok! is MSI K8N neo3 maybe the problem is the different architecture of the processor.
Mi goal would be prepare the server for rediscover the hardware and change the disks to the motherboard I want to use.
Any help or advice would be very nice.
Many thanks in advance

is a dead or life question as mi wife wants her personal computer back ;-)

Ale

Run an upgrade install from CD, and the new hardware will be detected and configured for.

Mary:
No luck with your suggestion, after upgrading with a new burn sme 7.4 CD
 I'm still getting this error.

........"Activating logical volumes
Volume Group "main" not found
ERROR: /bin/LVM exited abnormally (pid 445)
creating root device
mounting root filesystem
mount: error 6 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
switching to new root
switchroot failed: 22
umount /initrd/dev failed 2
Kernel panic not syncing attempt to kill init

I'm again with the spare hardware running without clues

You can always do a full backup, build the new server, and then restore the backup to the new server, then reinstall add on contribs. Settings will be picked up from the restored data.

Probably you already know, as per my first post, that your last advice is a truth I'm trying not to face...
In fact, I have nor disk space no spare disk bigger enough to make a full backup......
I should have, I know, but......

So Here I am, trying to understand why a new installation on the same machine goes OK and re installation over existing filesystem in this same machine, apparently goes well, disks are written  with the post upgrade process, and everything OK till boot up time, is when I get the kernel panic with no array  recognized?  Main volume not found...
Thanks a lot anyway I will think overnight, trying to elude what seems to be the only and obvious solution.

A.

Just to be sure, you have moved the two RAID1 disks to the new motherboard, and then booted up to the install CD, but selected upgrade existing install.
That method should in theory discover new hardware ie processor type etc, yet retain all existing settings & data.

I'm no expert on the drive error messages you mention, perhaps someone else can comment.

Assuming the above won't/doesn't work, and given that you cannot easily do a full backup, then use the restore from disk method outlined here:

I Have done exactly as you say!
And it should have worked but.....

I'll give a try to "upgrade disk" procedure
Thanks again for your time and answers
