Owner permissions of an iBay
« on: January 18, 2010, 07:50:23 PM »
Trying to set up the following for an iBay on SME Server 7.4

Owner = the_man = RWX
Group = users = R
Others = the rest of the world = No access at all

However, it seems to me that I can only give one set of permissions to one named group and another to 'everybody' (ie Others).... and I cannot see how to change ownership???

How *DO* I change an ownership and its permissions, please.

If you're going to speak tongues (ie do it through Linux, then please advise in an easy understood fashion as its all double serbia_croat-dutch to me!)

Many thanks

Steve

Read in bed... and was looking good until I reached the 'Missing Features' paragraph at the end...

The "There's no FTP access" comment specifically.
Which is what I want to use the iBay for (well, for SFTP through a VPN actually)...

So back to square one... :(

Steve:
if you want to access via SFTP, you don't need ftp access.. so I think that this will work for you.

Oh, OK, Stefano!

I'll give it a try then - at the weekend probably as likely to be shoret of time until then.

Thanks again

Steve

ibays are limited to the combination of read write permissions available in the ibay panel under the "User access for file sharing...." setting, and other Internet access settings on the same panel.

Correct. That said, however, I think it would be a reasonable New Feature Request to have the permissions/ownership requested by OP. IIRC, we currently have an option of writable by user admin, readable by group X. But we also should be able to support writable by user Y and readable by group X.

Thanks, Mary, but I am familiar with that - and that is what I need an answer to change.

As explained, I need to have myself able to read/write, a selected group to be able to only read and the rest of world to be unable to access at all.

As also said previously, I'm going to try Stefano's response... and in case that fails then I've been reading up on Linux and found things like 'chmod', 'chgroup', 'chusr' that I should be able to use to alter permissions on the folders at the OS level???

Might need to set up a new SME Server just to play about on though....

Cheers

Steve

Thanks, CB!

Looking for the New Feature Request forum now...
Sure I've seen one....

Steve

UPDATE: Can't find one...
Advise as to how I'd 'request a new feature' anyone please?
Basically need access to a standard Linux 'UGO' permissions set? (see learnt some of the lingo! :D)

You haven't. NFRs should be submitted via the bug tracker.

IMO extending sharedfolders contrib to have all the features of standard ibays (ftp access, web access, etc) could be the solution.. IMVHO an improved version of that contrib should be in the core..

Ciao
