upgrading hard disk
« on: June 08, 2009, 06:48:45 PM »
I'm about to upgrade to bigger hard disks. In the Wiki I found the recipe for this:
http://wiki.contribs.org/Raid.

In the notes is said:
Quote
Notes :
    * All of this can be done while the server is up and running with the exception of #1.
I presume nr. 1 is the command:
Quote
mdadm --grow /dev/md2 --size=max

It might also refer to:
Quote
   1. Shut down and install larger drive in system.

I'm not sure, and I know I must be, before issuing these commands.

Can anyone explain for me?

Thx,
Marcel

If you would stop and rethink I think you can draw the conclusion yourself easily because how are you to issue a command when your machine is not running and most servers do not have hot pluggable hard drives? :-)

I suggest you make sure you make a backup before starting anyhow, just to be on the save side.

As you seem to not understand,
#1 means

1. Shut down and install larger drive in system.
