Future Update from SME 8 beta 4 to SME 8 stable possible?
« on: June 26, 2009, 09:24:29 AM »
Hi everybody,

I've been using SME Server 7 for over a year now and I must say I'm still impressed by the functionality and accessibility of this masterpiece of an OS. Thanks to everyone who puts their efforts into it!

With the 4th beta of SME 8 now having been released I'm feeling sufficiently confident to give it a try on my home system. But I still have one important question: Will it be possible to update or upgrade to the final version of SME 8 when it becomes available with a simple yum command? Or will I have to install the final version from scratch? I'll be equally grateful for either positive or negative confirmations. ;-)

With previous releases the official line has been that upgrades from beta releases to the final release are not supported.

I would be surprised though if the upgrade process via yum or CD does not work OK, it's simply that the developers don't guarantee it (as they don't spend time testing it).

Charlie (one of the key developers) has recently suggested that people should start using the sme8beta release, in order to test it and contribs, earlier rather than later. I assume he means on small or private production systems where there is only small risk if something goes wrong.

sme8 beta4 is well advanced and has the functionality of the current sme server release.

The worst case scenario is that you can do a full backup of sme8beta and then do a restore to a fresh CD install of sme final release

I used an sme8 early beta release over a year ago and could not find anything wrong with it.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.

I originally installed a beta of 7.0, then upgraded (and upgraded, and upgraded...).

Everything worked OK, except that the update to SME 7.3 introduced a problem that only existed because I had started with a 'beta' version.

The official line at the time of the 7.0 release was that upgrades from beta to release versions are not supported; I would assume that the same will apply this time around.

Note that I could have avoided the problem I ran into (I'm sorry that I don't remember exactly what it was) if I had backed up my beta system, installed the release version, then restored the backup.

Yes, that is still the official response.

I've been testing V8.0 in virtual servers without any issues, I'm about to start testing V8.0 with a live box and contribs that I would use to determine what still might need tweaking.  Always been very happy with the progression of SME.   Version 7.0 had betas up to 7 or 8 I believe before Release Candidates came available.   Would anyone venture a guess as to when the V8.0RC1 might come available?
