Upgrading to SME 8
« on: July 02, 2009, 01:58:09 AM »

Time we had a SME 8 forum perhaps?

I'm trying to upgrade 7.0 to 8 experimentally to try running SME as DomU under Xen.  I follow faithfully the instructions for the upgrade given in:

http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server_8

and end up with this:

[root@gwen ~]# --> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Missing Dependency: kernel = 2.6.9-34.EL is needed by package kernel-module-appletalk
Error: Missing Dependency: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-34.ELsmp is needed by package kernel-smp-module-appletalk
Error: Missing Dependency: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-34.EL is needed by package kernel-module-appletalk
Error: Missing Dependency: kernel-smp = 2.6.9-34.EL is needed by package kernel-smp-module-appletalk
-bash: --: command not found
[root@gwen ~]# Error: Missing Dependency: kernel = 2.6.9-34.EL is needed by package kernel-module-appletalk
-bash: Error:: command not found
[root@gwen ~]# Error: Missing Dependency: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-34.ELsmp is needed by package kernel-smp-module-appletalk
-bash: Error:: command not found
[root@gwen ~]# Error: Missing Dependency: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-34.EL is needed by package kernel-module-appletalk
-bash: Error:: command not found
[root@gwen ~]# Error: Missing Dependency: kernel-smp = 2.6.9-34.EL is needed by package kernel-smp-module-appletalk
-bash: Error:: command not found
[root@gwen ~]#

Can/will anyone tell me what this means and how I get around it.  I wouldn't want the appletalk module anyway.  What I do need to install is the Xen kernel -

Good. If anything doesn't work perfectly, then please report via the Bug Tracker.

Well, the upgrade from 7.0 to 8 as per instructions doesn't work perfectly but I don't think it's a bug.  It's probably just something I haven't done, but I've no idea what it is.

Are you really on version 7.0 when you try the upgrade to 8.0 beta? I have tested upgrades from 7.3 and 7.4 to version 8 successfully and I am not sure whether a start/upgrade from 7.0 should work (and will be supported).

If you are on 7.0 I suggest to upgrade to 7.4 first and then from there to upgrade to 8.0 beta. It's all for testing, isn't it?

It should. If it doesn't, details should be reported via the Bug Tracker.

Cahrlie, are you sure? I mean.. I know there are some issue upgrading from SME prior 7.2 to 7.3 and above.. I would be surprised if direct upgrade from 7.0 to 8.X would work flawlessy

If I was sure, I would have said "It does", not "It should".

I'll stick with what I said - "It should. If it doesn't, details should be reported via the Bug Tracker".

Yes, it's a clean install of 7.0 onto an IBM x206, as 7.0 is the .iso I have.  Server-manager reports:

"SME Server 7.0
Copyright 1999-2006 Mitel Corporation"

The only thing added is Webmin.

I downloaded the v8 .iso last night but I'll hold off that and submit a bug report if you think it would help.

That's a bad idea. Webmin and server manager are incompatible.

Interesting observation.  I've never experienced any problems running Webmin with SME 7.0.   Server-manager is my remote GUI for SME and Webmin for CentOS, and given that I'm utilising quite a few CentOS applications in addition to SME (ie Cistron, MySQL, MaraDNS, Apache, Squid for a start) having Webmin to administer them with was invaluable.

Without Webmin I wouldn't use SME.

The you should not! You are aware of the architecture of SME Server? It has it's own management interface (called server-manager) which manages configuration files based on a template system fed by a internal configuration database. If you use webmin you are sure to overwrite your configuration files without updating the underlying system, effectively de-synchronising configuration files and services with the underlying database. This could very well lead to undesired behavior as well as issues that will not be supported by the developers.

This will most likely express itself after installing updates as you configuration files will be regenerated based on the internal configuration database and services will be reloaded with those new files, effectively removing all your webmin made changes.
Please read the manual and the SME Server Developer's Guide in the wiki.
