Network Printing
« on: July 08, 2009, 04:59:51 PM »
hi guys hope you can help

i have a multifunction konica printer at the office that is on my network on IP: 192.168.1.11

the sme server 7.4 ip is 192.168.1.10

i need to Connect the sme server to this Printer, sertvice the print ques and Share it to 30 Users on the network using windowz xp.

i do not want the users to print directly to this printer but rather let sme manage the print jobs.

the main reason is that i need to monitor how much printing is being done by the users on a monthly basis.

i have installed papercut but their support team said that i had to first "install" the konica printer to my sme server just as you would install it on a Windows SB 2008 Server. how do i do this on the sme 7.4 server when the printer is 50 meters away and is on the network.

any ideas

Have you tried installing it in the 'printers' configuration panel in server-manager in SME? You should be able to set it up as a new printer and assign the 192.168.1.11 address, you will prob want to leave the setting as the default 'RAW' unless there is a specific named port you have to print to on the printer.

Once you've done this, to add a new printer on the XP client you will browse for it on the network, and then select it. XP will prob say that no printer driver exists on the server, in which case you say 'OK' and either install the default XP client driver or a driver from a CD/elsewhere.

Your users should then be printing via SME, so you should be able to monitor their useage etc. Enclosed is a screenshot of our setup, we have 3 n/w printers (they happen to be printing via 2 separate print servers (hence the specific 'remote name' (the assigned ports on the print server), but the principle is the same)) and you can then control the queues etc thru sme.

Code: [Select]
Name         Description             Location  Remote address Remote name Action
epsonfx870   Epson Fx870 Dot matrix remote   192.168.2.8     PS-D2BBB5-P2 Remove
hpcolour     HP Deskjet 970cxi printer remote 192.168.2.37     Deskjet970c Remove
hplaserjet  HP Laserjet 4050        remote   192.168.2.8     PS-D2BBB5-P1 Remove

regards
John
