Bigpond ADSL - Mail Retrieval Problem
« on: June 04, 2002, 04:18:02 PM »
Hi

I am VERY new at Linux / e-smith. I have set up Big Pond ADSL with an Alcatel 4 port modem via 2 nic cards on my linux server (server/gateway - still fine tuning) .

My problem is retrieving my xxx@bigpond.net.au mail via my Windows XP box on the network through MS Outlook.

What do I use for POP3 and SMTP in the mail setup portion (a amte who is using straight windows / bigpond setup CD found "pop-server" in the pop3 box and "mail-hub" in the smtp box of outlook. and / or should I also be setting up somthing else in the e-smith side of it?

I have setup a domain but haven't done anything about the mail portion of it yet, I am at this stage interested in retrieving my bigpond email via outlook.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

There's nothing stopping you using the 'standard' setting recommended by Telstra on your windows XP box.

E-Smith will only play a part in your mail process if you want it to.
It's pretty simple to get your E-Smith server to act as a middle man for your Telstra mail handling but if you're new to the whole 'personal server' thing then I'd suggest ignoring it for the moment.

I've got outlook express set up in a similar way. E-Smith has been left with the default (empty) email settings and is playing no part in my Telstra mail process.

The only suggestion I can make is supplying the 'full' address of the POP and SMTP servers when you setup Outlook. The way to constuct this is as follows:

If the Telstra booklet said your POP server was named 'borris' and you lived in NSW then you'd enter 'borris.nsw.bigpond.net.au' into Outlook.

If the Telstra booklet said your POP server was named 'natasha' and you lived in Victoria then you'd enter 'natasha.vic.bigpond.net.au' into Outlook.

Please note that this in no way changes your email address. It just makes Outlooks job of finding the mail server(s) a little easier.

The short of it: Just follow the instructions in the little Telstra supplied booklet for Outlook and pretend the E-Smith server isn't there.

Regards,
Luke

I Use
POP3
  pop-server.bigpond.net.au
SMPT
  mail-hub.bigpond.net.au

Hope this helps
