Topic: Yum Updates ~ 20090827 [CLOSED]

Hey all,

Normally I've seen a post about large server updates via YUM. Yesterday I got an email via YUM about a new set of updates and checked the forums here to see if there was anything special about them as there seems to be quite a big amount of updates. I have been unable to search-fu for anything.

My question is: Are these just normal flow through updates or is there something special about these updates that may require special attention?

Latest yum updates 27Aug2009  has warnings in  /var/log/messages :

Aug 27 00:42:16 monty esmith::event[3384]: WARNING: Can't read module /lib/modules/2.6.9-78.0.8.ELsmp/weak-update
s/lib/modules/2.6.9-78.0.22.ELsmp/updates/appletalk/appletalk.ko: No such file or directory

Thats just log noise, nothing on the system is actually affected, and to the OP there is nothing special with the updates, if you haven't updated since 7.4 clean install or upgrade then you will see about 200+ MB of downloads which is normal as updates are being pushed every day or so.

Of course if you do have an issue please be sure to raise a bug. Thanks.

I expect these latest updates were coming from upstream for CentOS 4.8 that was released a few days ago.

It actually is quite a pile of updates. I have just under 100 modules to be updated. And I always keep my system up to date.

More concerning is that 4.8 is to be the last point update that will support new hardware. So the community should be pitching in to help the core team with testing of 8.0.

You are correct, CentOS 4.8 updates are included in the latest updates as well as SME Server updates.

No need to be concerned. And yes we do need help with SME Server 8 testing which you can view a QA @ http://wiki.contribs.org/SME8.0_QA - But lets not take over this thread Start a new thread if needed.

I have checked, my fully updated SME 7.4 is with 2.6.9-78.0.22 kernel, and Centos 4.8 was released August 21st and according the release notes it should be kernel-2.6.9-89.EL. It appears that the Centos 4.8 updates are not released for SME 7.4, but I might be wrong though.

From August 21st I didn't get any notification for large pile of updates which certainly should be the case with the Centos 4.8 updates, unless the updates were published earlier or the release notes are only for the Centos 4.8 iso.

I think you have as at 21st of August CentOS 4.8 was released and on the 22nd I received a big update mail from the base (which is the CentOS repository). They are all part of the set described in the CentOS 4.8 release notes.
As we rebuild some kernel modules for SME Server the kernel is not pushed and modules are held in smeupdates-testing and not published, hence you do not see it in your update set.
