Topic: IDE to SATA upgrade same computer, same 7.4 system.

I have 300 meg IDE system with RAID mirroring working fine

want to change drives to 1 Terabyte SATA mirrored.

I tried disconnecting 1 IDE drive.
Adding SATA card
Booting and as Administrator syncronizing drive.

I thought some time back I had read this was possible then use some command to expand size of partition to full drive but in this case I can not get the SATA drive to boot after the mirroring and disconnecting the IDE drive. Is this feasible or must I try 2nd method below.

I see the manual seems to suggests a install of 7.4 on the SATA drive then copy data using repair via CD but then requires any contribs to be installed manually.

I've now tried the 2nd method which also doesn't boot.

This would indicate that the inexpensive SATA card does not allow it to boot even though it seems to allow data to copy.

Would a SATA to IDE converter be the best solution or does anyone have recommended SATA cards that support booting of Linux.

hi

did you try to:
- disconnect the first ide hd
- connect sata one
- add the new hd to raid array via console
- let the array be in sync
- disconnect the second ide hd
- boot with SME's cd and choose "upgrade"?

this should leave unchanged your system but install GRUB.

when done, connect the second sata hd, add it to array, let the syncronization finish.. then, follow this

I think the problem is the Sabrent SiL3114 controller or could be the BIOS on the motherboard which of course has no configuration for SATA.

The Sabrent card says it works with Red Hat Linux 8.0 9.0 and other Linux versions but it does not appear to boot.

One possible option - SATA to IDE adapter but that is theoretically slower than a SATA adapter.

how did you setup your sata controller? did you disable any raid functionality?

well.. if SME installs on the sata hds then it means that SME sees them.. so I would install SME on the ide hds, then add 2 sata hds in a raid1 array and move there /home

Well I just tired this out this weekend.  I have a pci card that uses the SiI3112 chip, has 2 sata ports with RAID (didn't use the RAID).

SME 7.4 with all updates on 20gb IDE drive.  Shut down and add card and SATA drive.

Start machine use Admin consul to add SATA to array and allow to sync.

Reboot after sync everything appears fine.

Shutdown remove IDE drive and restart computer and to my surprise it boot up just fine.  I thought I would have to set up GRUB again, but it booted right up.

Shutdown again and add second SATA drive, reboot and add second SATA drive to RAID and allow it to sync.  Everything appeared to be working properly.

So the the chipset appears to work.  When I added an IDE disk that I just used for data back into the system to copy data over it to the bigger SATA drive it would not boot up.  I think the system was trying to boot off of the IDE data drive.  I had to go into the BIOS and select the SATA drive as the default boot drive and tell it to ignore the IDE Drive.  When I tried to mount the IDE data drive, it said something along the lines of  bad data super block and thought it was a ext2 fs ???  At that point I reverted back to the IDE drive set up and the data drive mounted as expected.  I didn't have time to dig into the problem after that.

I would suggest you look at your BIOS and see if their isn't an option to select the SATA drive as the boot drive.  The system I am using is a pentium III 550mhz setup and the SATA drive was identified in the BIOS.

Well I bought a different upgrade card with the IsI3112 chip and 2 Sata ports. the previous one had 4.
They come with software windows RAID drivers which of course I ignored - I just plugged it in and let SME find and install it during installation..

This one booted, I did a 7.4 install then restored a complete backup I had done to another computer - seems to be working.
