novice - looking into possibilities
« on: September 13, 2009, 08:43:36 AM »
Hey, i am running a sme server for a few years now, being a basic install with mail etc...
I wanted to explore the possibilities from now, and i would like to build a very silet server, that can run standalone in the attick...
I was thinking to install a 32Gb SSD with the basic program, and run a 2x160Gb IDE-RAID for data. Is this possible with SME? How is it done?

gr,
Supafly...

Hello,

Yes this is possible, but I don't understand why you would want to do this when you are running a RAID1. The thing you are doing here is, that you are implementing a single point of failure for your system, and that's not good. So my advice is stick with your RAID1 and drop the SSD drive, and if you even think about using SSD's then you should be sure to use the SLC type and not the cheaper MLC because it will suffer from wear out to quickly and eventually make your system fail.

I was thinking to put in a SSD because of the no-noise fact. The raid can spindown if no longer used?
I'm not pretty sure what system i will build, but am looking forward to start using some Epia-something motherboard, maybe with Sata disks? Don't really know yet... The two IDE-disks are allready in my older system, and can be moved to the new system...

If you choose to run on the epia systems because of the low power consumption I would recommend to use some SATA drives from WDs green line because they also very low powered. When it comes to noise the WD RE3 or RE4 drives are practically noise less and much cheaper than any SSD SLC drives.

BTW Linux does not work very well with most soft raid controller.
