Dansguardian Content Filtering Issues
« on: October 09, 2009, 09:59:23 AM »
Hello there,

My first post here and also a sme newbie. I just installed dansguardian and configured it as per the instructions. When I try to do the content filtering from the server manager, it doesn't reflect. It doesn't update even after rebooting the sme server. Is the content filtering only done through the files directly (ex. banneddomainslist, bannedurlslist..etc) and not from the server manager? Thank you for your help in advance.

Did you install the free version of Dansguardian as outlined here
http://wiki.contribs.org/Dansguardian
or
did you install the dungog commercial version ?

The free version does not have a server manager panel, the commercial version does.

If you are using the free version then please re-read the contrib wiki article more carefully.
All setting changes are made directly to the dansguardian config files and you MUST restart dansguardian after any change in order for the changes to take effect.
It is clearly spelt out in the article.

If you are using the dungog commercial version then many details exist at the dungog website and you are entitled to support from dungog, so ask there.

Hi Mary,
I have installed the version of dansguardian from the link you have mentioned. I am not sure whether it is free or commercial but I do see content filtering on my server panel. I also have installed squidguard as well. How do I restart dansguardian after the changes are made?

It's alright, I saw how to restart dansguardian. :-)

Thank you Mary.

This link
http://wiki.contribs.org/Dansguardian
refers to the free version of the dansguardian contrib, and that version does NOT have a server manager panel.

Then I assume that panel is for squidguard and has nothing to do with dansguardian

PLEASE NOTE, it is recommended to only install either dansguardian OR squidguard and NOT both.

If you install dansguardian, then you can also configure it to use the squidguard lists/rules, as well as the default dansguardian behaviour.

Thank you for your tip. So, squidgurd does the same functions as dansguardian? Which comes to another issue. When I give the squidguard stop command, it always fails!

No, Dansguardian does a whole lot more than squidguard.

Moving this topic to the SME 7.x contribs forum, it is more appropriate there. Thanks!
