System goes down during Internet outage
« on: October 28, 2009, 09:52:42 AM »
I have the latest version of Sail installed at home with a single port TDM card in the system. Basically all incoming calls come in via the TDM and all outgoing calls go via my VOIP provider. If I need to I can make an outgoing PSTN call by pre-selecting the DAHDI trunk.
My problem is whenever the Internet goes down the whole phone system goes down as well. I have  a snom 370, a couple of ATA's and a few grandstreams and ALL of the extensions (as well as all the trunks) become unreachable during an outage. Is this normal or have I misconfigured something. Any calls coming into the PSTN go to operator VM after a couple of rings and I can't make outgoing calls through the PSTN line. Has any else seen this before.

Is SAIL your gateway as well, or are you using in server-mode only.
The only thing I can think of is that you have a router in your network besides Sme/SAIL, and that is going down, bringing your internet and phone system down with it (phones are looking at the gateway to register).

Hi Lloyd

yes it will do that.   It is to do with the way in which Asterisk does name resolution.  You can try adding srvlookup=no to your sip header.

Also, you can change any carrier domain names to true IP addresses.
