Raid1 Drive Sync
« on: November 05, 2009, 07:13:47 PM »
Hi all,

Regarding Raid1 and 2) IDE drives

Current Status as of (Power Outage)

Quote
md2 : active raid1 hda2[1]
      59947136 blocks [2/1] [_U]

md1 : active raid1 hda1[1]
      104320 blocks [2/1] [_U]

I've attempted to re-add the missing partitions back to the raid which I believe are (md1 = hdc1) and (md2 = hdc2) as follows:

Quote

mdadm --add /dev/md1 /dev/hdc1
mdadm: cannot find /dev/hdc1: No such file or directory

Then this:
mdadm --add /dev/md2 /dev/hda2
mdadm: Cannot open /dev/hda2: Device or resource busy

Also I remember there was an md1 =  hda1[0] not hda1[1] ?

Anyhow looks like my IDE drive aka hdc has failed ?

Anyhow, any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Looks like your hdc has failed. But you know that, so I don't know what you hope we are going to tell you here.

Remove the drive and replace it. Or test it at least.

There's also probably hdc related log messages in /var/log/messages. You've been around here long enough to know to look there.

Honestly if you look at your own post, what else did you expect anyone to say?

Charlie was being constructive in looking at the logs so you could at least try and understand why your drive was kicked out and ensuring that what you suppose to be true is in fact true.

Your response to the "hand that feeds sme to you" was poor, tch tch !
Charlie gave additional answers to your question, which you had already essentially answered yourself.

Was just curious if someone knew of some magic trick perhaps that I was un-aware of to check the drive prior to taking it out and putting it in another machine for testing, since I'm not really familiar with Linux commands for testing without a gui, so I figured I could avoid putting it into another machine altogether and confirm that it is indeed dead, and simply replace the drive without having to go through the process of taking it out, putting into another machine and testing it with another OS since SME does not have the tools that I'm familiar with.

However, if the drive is not dead ? keeping in mind that I was told on a previous drive in another posting in which I had a degraded array that a drive was dead and also followed several steps in the Wiki'ws and How Too's and SME forums and other hecklers indicated that it was dead and replace the drive same as I"m sort of getting now
In fact I took out the previously suspect drive and tested in another machine to find out that it was NOT dead at all.
This shows me that there must be someone out there who knows actually how to test it while it's still in the SME box using some sort of REAL method of confirmation to declare the drive dead.

I realized I was on my own even before I posted it and really wasnt expecting much, but I figured I would give it a shot.
People keep indicated that " you have been around long enough, and know enough etc etc",
But what you fail to understand is that this was the same types of responses since almost the beginning of my entry into the SME forum LOL.

Dont' worry about responding I'll take care of this myself, just thought I would ask just in case on that slim chance someone knew something.

If you don't know just say you don't know that would be OK too.

Thank you fellow hecklers, I look forward to your next heckling

I'll post back my findings for others perhaps it will help them in the future to get help on this topic since no one else seems to know.

Happy heckling

Please drop your smart ass attitude, we don't want it here.

If you were more proactive and read quite recent forum posts you would find references to smartctl, which is part of sme server and can be used to test your drives in situ. So do a search on smartctl for the answers you are after.

As well you should obtain the drive manufacturers diagnostic software and run extensive tests on your suspected faulty drive, also in situ. You really should test both drives while you are at it. Only you know the brand of drives you use, so search Google.

You can download the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD) which has lot's of test software on it. You would have also found this information pretty easily too with a Advanced forum search.

The drive is either faulty and that's why the array is broken, or there is some incompatibility with either the drive & RAID1, or with the motherboard and drive speeds. A while back there were issues with Seagate drives not staying in sync. All of this has been reported in the forums over the last couple of years, so as your knowledge is poor (as stated by you), then I suggest you set aside a few hours for some backreading of forum posts. You will learn a lot.

Also see http://wiki.contribs.org/Raid
and particularly here
http://wiki.contribs.org/Monitor_Disk_Health
both of which you could have easily found without me having to tell, but you do seem a bit lazy.

Ever heard of the term "self help", I suggest you use it more often.
You seem to have some sort of arrogance attitudinal problem where you treat people here as hecklers. Grow up and behave like an adult, this is a skilled technical user forum, your poor responses and attitude have no place here, so please apologise and respond more politely in future.

I would add that this is not an helpdesk but a forum.

for the OP: your hdc is dead as you wrote that SME can't see it.. or, maybe, your secondary ide channel is dead.. in any case you ask for an opinion/suggestion and you got it..

now, please, take a deeeep breath, relax, take it easy and come back here with a (totally) different attitude.

I'm happy to help with the updating of your records.

I have no attitude, actually the responses from the original response on down appear to be responses with attitudes and anyone who has seen my posts already know that I don't accept this kind of response anywhere, so before anyone responds with this type of response they should have read the forums and they would have already known not to respond in this negative sarcastic manor because it's simply not acceptable anywhere.

If anyone were treated this way anywhere in real life it is never accepted anywhere in public or anywhere.

It's a good thing your not selling SME because your customer service skills really stink.

I know how to treat customers I have a 1200+ 100% rating with the highest level of DSR's on ebay among the top rated seller; and am happy to claim the best customer service available anywhere.

Having said that I understand how people want to be treated as proof of my record.

Also if you read my posts I've mentioned this topic before as there should perhaps be a rating system in which the helpfulness of people in the forums could be rated just like Ebay, that way people will know what to expect.

Let your record speak for itself instead of just a few who think they are God's gift to the world.

But I doubt that will ever happen because I'm so very confident that the ratings would be very low in fact if I rated this customer service and responses I would have to say it would be a (negative ebay feedback)

You have officially received a negative feedback in your answers and I think this will be good cause to prompt my new feedback system.

This should help with your understanding of your answers and perhaps future purspective as well.

I'm happy to have helped you with the successful updating of your records

Further to get back on the topic at hand, I will post my official findings of this Hard Drive Topic for others to review in order to help them also further understand this subject since the answers are of NO real help thus far.I look forward to posting my How To on this subject.

I have really enjoyed this post, thanks for the drama
Happy Heckling

Your poor attitude & arrogance has been consistent in many of your posts.
I wouldn't want to be dealing with you in business and I won't be in these forums anymore.

You obviously have no concept of what being humble means.
