SME Server with BT Home Hub
« on: November 21, 2009, 06:03:59 PM »
I've not been here for a while as I have been happily running my server on a Netgear router with PIPEX as my ISP. I work from home and used a static IP so I could get web amd mail at home really fast - very good it has been too.

Like someone else on this forum, I have now moved location and trying to be recession proof, I am considering moving all of my minutes and broadband services to a new provider, one of which could be BT, through their hideously named "Total Broadband" offering with the BT Home Hub.

I understand this (http://www.frequencycast.co.uk/homehub.html) box to have WIFi as well as Ethernet connectivity, that by default it supports DCHP to the LAN, but that can be disabled and that it has an embedded firewall. Doesn't sound too much like hard work but I wondered if anyone else had successfully deployed SME Server where the BT Home Hub is the WAN router. I don't want to blow my hard earned dough on a pup!

Any comments or caveats will be gratefully acknowledged.

Thanks for a great product - mine's been running flawlessly for over 6 years now, and apart from a HDD crash, its been a dream to work with... and I can't blame SME Server for a HDD Crash now, can I?

Moving this topic to the General Discussion forum, it is more appropriate there. Thanks!

I have not tried this wendor at all, for running a server against internet, the important thing should be:

1. That it can do port forwarding trough the nat router: http://www.filesaveas.com/bthomehub_portforwarding.html

2.  That they dont block inngoing or outgoing ports you like to use. I think you have to ask them.
