Restore from tape
« on: January 05, 2010, 02:46:15 AM »
 :?  Have a server that all users accounts and emails have reverted to almost a year ago.  Can not find a restore in the message log. Or, Should I say what does a restore entry look like in the Message log.   Any Ideas.

From looking at /etc/e-smith/events/restore-tape/S10tape-restore-flexbackup, it looks like restore messages would be in /var/log/messages and/or /flexbackup.extract.log (note: not in /var/log).

I've seen systems magically revert by several months as you describe twice - once due to a user running the pc vendor's "system restore" function at boot (HP/Compaq had an option on some workstations for a while that displayed "press F11 to restore" at every boot, but never actually updated the backups), and once due to a failed raid array (the array failed and the user didn't notice, 6 months later the "live" drive died, and the system booted from the "failed" drive that had old data on it).

mmccarn;
  Thank you for the input.   I was looking for the entrys to the messages log for a restore.
 I thought of the raid problem, but haven't had the chance to check it out.  The system has hardware ware raid. There have been no warings of a raid proble.  They have also been using back up to a work station. The system they backup to is in my Data Center but was only used for test.

Thanks again

There won't be any warnings, unless the RAID adapter has flashing lights, or you have installed additional adapter specific software. The SME server raid monitoring function only works with software RAID.
