I have an SME server acting as an Internet gateway.  What can I do as a firewall.  Does the SME server have a firewall?  If it does, how do I activate it?

The SME server/gateway is a firewall.  There's nothing to activate, it just is.

Cool, that's what I was hoping...

Thanks

You _could_ of course read the manual to find out what your server actually is capable of ;-)

I agree with Robert's sentiments, but this thread raises some important questions.

I have been using Linux for ages, but recently spent weeks getting Twiggi to work on my SME box. Why, because I did not know who or what the httpd user was. Its easy now that I know, but I found it impossible to follow a very good set of install instructions because of one bit of missing knowledge.

Maybe I'm a dick as well, but I dont think so. People new to Linux need detailed replies to their posts for help, and speaking for myself, are very grateful to get the free experience of many skilled contributors.

Newbies in particular should be encouraged to post, and to read and learn from available sources of information. To those who willing give answers to their questions, please ensure that you make no assumptions as to the knowledge level of the poster - often its something completely obvious that they are missing.

Sure, it takes a "big man" to tell someone to RTFM.  It takes a bigger man to resolve someone's problems or questions.

Does it take a bigger man yet to actually RTFM?  The point is, somebody else has already taken the time to answer your questions, but you apparently can't be bothered to expend the most minimal effort to find the answer for yourself.  For heaven's sake, it's even linked from this very page!

You appear to be harboring some serious misconceptions about the purpose of this forum, and the relationship of its participants to you.  I say this because you seem to believe that we owe you spoonfed information.  Sorry, that's not the case.  We are all volunteers here, providing input on our own time (yes, even the folks from Mitel; answering questions here isn't part of their job) as we are able and/or feel like it.  I decide what questions to answer based on some combination of how well I know (or think I know) the answer, how much time I have, whether it's already been answered, the apparent attitude of the person asking, and other factors; I suspect others follow a similar approach.

When I first saw your question, I figured I could answer it with a quick one-liner, so I decided to do so.  I'm beginning to regret that decision, and am unlikely to repeat it, due to your arrogance in rejecting the suggestion to take a look at the documentation that's already been prepared for this product.

On this forum, as with most other parts of life, you'll get much further if you make a reasonable effort to find the answer for yourself first.  IOW, the saying that "God helps those who help themselves" isn't only true of God.
