small footprint linux desktop clients
« on: September 16, 2008, 03:16:56 AM »
Hi, I'm interested in small linux desktop distributions that integrate with SME Server. For instance, how do I set up Puppy Linux for this? Thanks.

I think that the SME server is not buildt for this job at all, and I also does not know any Linux clients that really would fit in as required. (Slax is a good small client, but I think it will not log into windows shares, etc.)

On the other side I think Edulinux has some arrangement allmost like requested. There is a workstation variant, a server variant, and a think client variant, that can be supported from the server. The intended use for this distro is to be used in a classroom with a little bit powerfull server and then thin clients for each student. There is also a "standallone workstation option".

It's quite a long time since I tested this distro, and I do not know it very well.

A Debian Live client can be made small enough e.g. using LXDE instead of GNOME. Moreover, the "toram" boot option can be used to run the system in RAM. See http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,45263.0.html for more details.

I followed this guide and it works great for a minimal Ubuntu install, allows complete customisation:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal

You can then follow the Ubuntu authentication how to to connect to the SME server and map network drives etc.:
