Backup to External USB - file well hidden
« on: January 28, 2010, 07:32:39 PM »
Well did a search not only here but Google as well, and dont seem to be able to find the right answer to the issue I have.

Just seem to get one problem out of the way when I hit another, but all part of the fun of learning.

Okay, did a backup to External USB drive through the cmd line (SME Console), Selecting the  "perform backup to usb" option.

External drive is NOT formatted to Ext3, but to NTFS (also did ExtFat), system detects the drive with no problem, and does the process of backing up the files (97mb), when completed I remove the drive from SME and plug it into my windows system, no sign of the backup file, yet windows is reporting 97Mb of the drive used.

Back onto SME and through the CMD Line, check the drive and by listing the contents can clearly see the 97Mb compressed backup file.

No matter what we do, the file is NOT visible in Windows at all.

Windows has hidden files as Shown, on checking the archive file on Linux, the attributes are as to be expected....Nothing hidden.... Windows can see any other TGZ file we use.

Just seems to be the oddest thing, so getting to the bottom of it will probably enable me to have a decent nights sleep  :-P

Thanks

Graeme

NTFS is THE bad choice

format your external disk with ext3 fs, and use only to make backups.. don't use it with windows or other s.o.
backup is a copy of your data and should be kept in a secure place

You will be getting sick of me Stefano  :D  Having tried various options I think I am going to resign myself to the Ext3 route.  However, I am highly delighted to find that the software RAID 1 built into SME is superb (having just also tried ClearOS), no setup and config, works out of the box, and ok gives me a basic backup facil by using a 3rd disk to swap in and out.

I just needed to get a quick fix for some sort of backup so I can get this up and running, will play with formatting an external drive tomorrow.

Tonight I am going to load SME 8 onto my VM and have a look at that.

Thanks for your help
