Topic: SME Server 7.4 RAID sync to take 10 days? [SOLVED]

I've just installed SME Server 7.4 on recent dual-core cpu hardware with 2GB RAM and a pair of identical 1TB SATA hard disks.  With an uptime of 4hrs. 55min., the Admin-Manage disk redundancy panel indicates:
  "resync = 2.0%  ... finish=13763.2min  speed=1157K/sec"
Also, console responsiveness is extremely slow. 

On a previous server with a pair of ATA 500G drives I remember sync taking several hours, but not multiple days. 

Anyone else experience this?

I could be wrong here, but I think the software raid on SME has a fairly high latency in syncing the disks, so while it sounds like a lot, it may actually be normal. Someone with more experience and/or knowledge may be able to shed more light on it.

Looks like your SATA controler is configured as legacy IDE, and thus, the sync is verry slow. You should go in your bios, and change the SATA controler to work in AHCI mode. The problem is that you may have a kernel panic on the next reboot, because the driver to access the drives has changed. If this happen, you can boot your server on sme7.4 iso, choose the rescue option. Then you'll have to rebuild the initrd with mkinitrd command

Hi i have a similar problem. My Softraid1 Sync - normally 2 to 3 hours - is still running after 12 hours  with only 25% finished. How do i stop the syncronisation manually? I think only power down the system is a not good idea?

Why would you want to stop the synchronisation? Having RAID1 which is slow to sync is still better than having no mirroring at all.

You should investigate why the sync is slow. It is probably specific to your hardware and the BIOS settings you have. Google.
