D-Link DSL 300 Ethernet Modem + E-Smith?
« on: June 17, 2002, 01:30:03 PM »
Hello,

Does E-Smith work (well) with the D-Link DSL 300? It is a Ethernet modem. Comes with the ADSL package from iiNet - www.iinet.net.au.

Currently using Smoothwall (for Dial-up access) - but I like e-smith's ability to be a file server etc...

Thanks,

Luke.

Hi Luke

I am currently using the D-Link DSL 300 modem with my Netspace ADSL account (www.netspace.com.au).

I set my e-smith server up as a dedicated server/gateway using the in-built PPPoE function with my username/password etc and it works beautifully.

I also had a go at using the Dynamic DNS function which works well.

I am no means an expert at e-smith, quite the opposite, but have found that it integrates very well with the D-Link modem, particularly seeing that it is the ethernet model and NOT the USB version.

Hope this helps mate

Thanks for that Rod. One more question - do you have a second network card in the e-smith server which connects to a switch (so that other pcs on the network can use the internet)?

Thanks,

rick

Hi..

I use e-smith as my file server thru my switch.  For internet connection, I use IPCop (Smoothwall clone).  The IPCop box has 2 NIC's, 1 for the local LAN and 1 for the DSL 300..
Works great..

You must have a 2nd NIC in the SME server for your lan.
I use Internode DSL and the D-Link DSL-300.

Setup was effortless plug it in set the IP gateway and subnet in the server config and a quick boot. It took less tha 3 min to do and the sytem has run faultless for weeks.

Hi Luke

It is neccessary to have a second NIC for the internal network.

When setting up e-smith, you configure your "external" network being the connection with your DSL modem. I don't know about this other smoothwall program but i do know that e-smith's internal configuration works fine with connecting to my DSL provider and should with yours no worries. (i use the SME Server 5.1.2)

I set up my "internal" network by giving my second NIC a static IP address (eg. 192.168.100.1) and setting it up as a DHCP server for the rest of my computers. I then simply plugged the e-smith server into my switch using a normal straight ethernet cable, plugged my other PC's into the same switch, and set my PC's to use DHCP. Thats it!

Any more questions, let us know and will help you out as much as i can :)

Cheers

Rod
