Blocking URL by Time
« on: February 15, 2010, 12:12:48 AM »
Hi

I hope this is in the correct section.

I need to block a few certain URL's based on time. I have a teenager in the house now that doesn't like doing home work.

Is there something that the community can suggest that I can install that can be set up for a single machine?

I assume you mean block access from a workstation on your network (which uses sme server as the gateway) to an external URL, as you did not clearly say.

Dansguardian
http://wiki.contribs.org/Dansguardian

After installation, read the various default config files (refer article for these) and you will see examples of how to block based on time, and based on a certain workstation IP(s) on your network.

You would also need to force the allocation of fixed IPs based on workstation mac address using the Hostnames & addresses panel in server manager, otherwise DHCP will issue a workstation a random IP address (which could also change from startup to startup or renewal of DHCP leases). If the workstation IP was allowed to change, then the Dansguardin block/filter would no longer work.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.

you can achieve the sambe result without installing Dansguardian or Squidguard, but just creating a custom template for squid's config file..

please search with google for squid time based acl.

anyway, ip to be blocked must be fixed.. or, otherwise, you have to create the acl for all your dhcp ip range (google will tell you more)

Thank you and My Apologies

I didn't completely explain my circumstances but you worked it out perfectly.

Will look at your suggestions and see which way I need to jump.

Thanks again

Can you blame him/her? :-D

What happened to classical parenting like forbidding stuff and for instance removing the PC altogether? ;-)

I'm not the parent(s). I am the unfortunate one that happens to have them staying with my wife and I

And, Why not! Blame the child.  Works for me

Removing th PC (or MAC) would work except the school issued it

let me guess : facebook?

I use my ADSL router Firewall ACL Schedule Rule to block certain sites being accessed from certain local IP.
