Webshare SME 8
« on: February 22, 2010, 03:39:39 AM »
Alright, before I raise a bug and have everyone upset with me, I figure Id check first. I did some searching with no avail, so maybe u guys can help me. I have an SME 8 Beta 4 server with a lot of contribs installed. I installed the webshare. It showed up in the server-manager panel. I configured it, tried to go to it, and it said it wasn't founf. Then I tried to go to my regulars domain name with no success. I even tried my static IP to get to my server-manager with no success. However, all of my Tomcat webapps still came up. (IE www.domainname.com:port/webapp name). Any ideas, or special logs I should look for. Eventually I just removed the contrib through Putty and restarted, everything was back to normal

Exactly what URL did you use to access webshare ?
Exactly what message did you receive ?

View the various log files eg httpdxxxxx
In server manager View log files, is that too hard ?
You really don't need me to keep telling you this.

The place to report issues with sme8 and contribs is on the sme8 Contribs page
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME8.0_Contribs_QA
No one is developing apps for sme8 yet as it is still in beta5 release.

Please commence your searches at the main Wiki page, it links to just about everything at contribs.org, you would have found references to sme8.

Please update to sme8beta5 by running
yum update --enablerepo=smeupdates-testing

I went to http://rburnsplumbing.com/webshare/Paschen
It returned timeout. So did rburnspumbing.com, and server-manager. However, I was able to log onto putty connecting to www.RBurnsplumbing.com to uninstal it. And also, my tomcat webapps worked.

I know where the log files are, but I dont know exactly what messages pertain to my epidimic with webshare. Sorry about the noobness. Dont be upset with me

Neither do I, they are your log files so you have to look in them, I'd start with the general purpose "messages" log file and then look at all the http log files. Is that too hard to do, rather than saying I don't know what to look for ? Attempt access with your application noting the time, and then look at the time in the log to see what entries are made around that same time.

No Avail. I reinstalled it,and my previous "Paschen" share was still there, already setup, so I proceeded to the url. Using firefox, it asked me to confirm a security exception for my certificate. I confirmed exception, then it went right to /webshare/Paschen is not a valid url on this server. the same thing it says when I have broken links that connect to a page that does not exist. I then made another webshare with "full" option enabled. Thats when it hit again and the domain would not work at all. It's as if it move the primary website from my website Ibay to something else. But then it should say IBay customization not configured. So I'm not sure whats going on. Just giving an update. Still looking in my log files trying to decipher what it all means, and what is important to me for this situation.

I suspect you have been making lots of manual changes to your server (based on your frequent recent posts) and probably stuffed a few things up. Some of those changes sound quite inappropriate and are not the way it is done in sme server. You should not need to be changing file permissions etc, except in specific circumstances. You seem to be using the approach as a hit or miss troubleshooting technique.

I personally am not going to troubleshoot your system, although I have been offering you specific advice where I can.
I suggest you  get a test box and install a fresh unmodified sme8beta4 OS, then yum update to sme8beta5, then one contrib at a time, install and test to see if each one works. Nearly any old server will do for testing, the worst thing that can happen is it runs slowly.

That way you will sort out whether there is a problem with the contrib or if there is a problem with how you have modified or configured your server.

Learning on a production system or even a system meant for production, is not a good idea. It's better to sort out all the issues on a test system, and then install correctly to a production system.
