qmail -how to move existing mail to a new server install
« on: March 30, 2010, 11:12:43 PM »
I had a server failure but have a backup of the users directories.
The users use Web Mail
I have tried moving the old Maildir contents from a backup to the user new Maildir.
The folders seem to move OK but the individual mail does not read from the Webmail.
How can I recover the individual mail files

The folders seem to move OK but the individual mail does not read from the Webmail.

That's likely to be a permission/uid issue, how did you move them ? i.e what command did you use ?

As Stefano asked did you backup using standard SME Server method.

You may need to correct home folder ownership: ...

Or better yet, don't break it in the first place, by using a more correct backup/restore procedure.

Here is some more information about moving Maildir's.

THIS IS A LAST DITCH RECOVERY METHOD AND IS NOT SUPPORTED AND NOT RECOMMENDED

http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,42280.15.html

If you use SME's built in backup or one of the backup contribs from this site, monitor your backup logs and test your restore procedures, you should never have to go through the above pain.

Back it up!!!!
Check the backup logs or emails daily!!!!!
Test restore it monthly!!!!!!

unless, of course, you don't care about your data.
